Update September 15, 2019

Feast of Tabernacles 2019

Sunday Evening, October 13 - Monday, October 21

Shalom Everyone!

Tonight marks the beginning of the 4-week countdown to Sukkot, and we at Ami Yisrael are in to full swing 'festival mode'!  In this newsletter, we want to share with you some of the latest developments and needs in regards to this year's festival.

Teachers - Over the summer a number of individuals have offered to present either a Main Session message or a Break-Out Session message (or both).  In addition, a number of people will be providing classes for children and/or teens. Be sure to check the 'Teachers' page for details.

Lulavim - We need about 10 volunteers to help tie the Lulavs that we use throughout the festival.  Please let us know if you are able to help, then be at the Dining Hall at 1:00 PM on Sunday, Oct. 13.  Bring a pair of scissors if able.

Tribes - The 'Tribes' program is our way of getting the chores done, but it's also a great way to build camaraderie with each other.  If you are wondering which 'tribe' you will be a part of in this year's festival, just contact Scott Hagler (housing@sooj.org) and he can fill you in on all the details.

Once you find out which 'tribe' you are in, you can then go the 'Tribes' web page to see the daily schedule.  There will be more 'Tribes' information coming soon.

"Back by popular demand" ...

the Hebay Auction Logo Family Auction and  Fun Show

As a way to raise funds to pay festival expenses, we will again be having the "He-bay" Auction - a 'Hebrew' version of Ebay but without the Internet.  'Tex' Williams - our auctioneer - will do his best to bring the highest price for the items you donate to the cause.  Your role is to bring one item you think might  interest someone else . . . after all "one man's junk is another man's treasure"!  It doesn't have to be just junk . . . it can be things you care about but no longer need - maybe a coffee cup from Yellowstone Park, a '56 Corvette hubcap, or an original IPhone.  It could also be a favorite homemade cake or pie.  Let's see who wins those bids!

To allow the kids to get in on the fun, we are going to start the evening with a "Kid's Auction". To make it easier on the auctioneer, we ask that if you bring an item specifically for kids, you label it as such. Any items that are not sold in the kids auction will be added to the main auction.

To help with the organization of the auction, we ask that you bring your items to the Conference Center on Friday, Oct. 18 between 12:30pm and 1:45pm. Please attach a tag giving the item's description (if not obvious), its estimated value, and your name (if you wish). Tex, along with his crew, will be there to receive the items and discuss their 'history' with you.

To add to the fun (and to give the auctioneer a break), we're hoping to have various "Fun Show" acts interspersed throughout the evening.  If you can sing a song, act an act, tell a joke, or do just about anything that's entertaining AND proper for the audience, let us know!

So go through your closets, attic, and garage and bring your stuff to the Feast!  But keep in mind - all proceeds go to support the SOOJ Festival.

Help us make this a fun-filled event!

Lulav Liturgy - We need someone to lead each day's 'Lulav' service. If you are familiar with this tradition and would like to provide this service, please call Tim Kelley (903) 769-2750.

Children/Teen Activities  - There will be a number of activities devoted to children and early teens -

Shofar Adventures (Children's Activity) - All about shofars without busting the budget.

Rocket Man - Hit the Target (Children's Activity ages 8-15) ~ The Torah is like a target, and God wants us to strive to Hit the Target. In this activity we use a creative way to illustrate the thought and effort that one must put in to achieving that goal.

Teen Game Night A great night of super-cool teen-night FUN!! No matter what your favorite game might be, bring it on!

What's in a Word? (Children's Activity)- How important are the words we speak?

Crowns (Children's Activity) - A make-and-take craft for young children.

Kiddush – We will be setting apart the Sabbath using our version of the traditional Kiddush ceremony on each evening before the Sabbath during the festival.  Feel free to bring a loaf of challah to share, a bottle of wine and/or grape juice, and candles for your table. If you would like to lead one of these services, let us know.

Don't forget the "He-Bay auction.  This is a way to help raise funds to pay SOOJ's festival expenses.  Your role is to bring one item you think might  interest someone else . . . after all "one man's junk is another man's treasure"!  It doesn't have to be just junk . . . it can be anything of value you would like to contribute.  To make the auction a little more interesting, SOOJ is going to attach either a $25, $50, or $100 Walmart gift card to some of the items.

For more details, check the web site and the last Update.

Actors, Musicians, Joke-tellers - be sure to sign up for your spot during the Auction.  During the Auction, there will be a number of "Fun Show Breaks" so our auctioneer can himself 'take a break'.  Contact Tim Kelley if you have something to contribute!

Dining Hall Refrigerator/Freezer - Please do not place personal items in the Dining Hall fridge/freezer. Also, please take ALL of your leftover food items and containers back to your site after every group meal.

Early Arrivals/ Late Departures - Our housing contract with Camp Shiloh begins at 3:00 PM on Sunday, Oct. 13 and ends at 12:00 PM on October 21.  If you plan to arrive earlier or stay later, be sure to contact Camp Shiloh directly to make those arrangements.  Chances are, there will be no charge for arriving earlier on Sunday, but there may be a charge if you remain in a cabin, suite, or motel later than the 12:00 PM checkout time on Monday.  RV site users may remain on their site until shortly after sundown on Monday.   In addition, all SOOJ attendees are welcome to remain on campus to attend all SOOJ activities on Monday afternoon and evening.

Arriving on the Sabbath? - The Ami Yisrael Fellowship will be holding its normal Sabbath Services in the Conference Center at Camp Shiloh. In the previous Update, we said that it would start at 1:00 PM, but that was incorrect.  THE CORRECT START TIME IS 12:00 NOON. We will follow our normal format.

We would love for you to join us!
